I have reached Bamberg, and it is very beautiful. My Airbnb is quiet, clean, and VERY spacious (room to sleep at least 5...). I got to go to a biergarten, explore a really cool playground, and listen to a symphony.
Hello! This week is dedicated to getting ready for my time in Europe, and saying goodbye to family and friends here in Seattle. Today, I tried packing all of my stuff in a carry-on-size bag, which gives me a good idea of what the actual packing will be like when I get my bag tomorrow. With most everything packed, all my stuff is about 15 pounds! I've never traveled this light before, but I am looking forward to it. On Monday, I met with a UW professor and a librarian about my summer research on stories and how I can search for published content related to my research. My major takeaway is that the work that I'm doing may not exist exactly as I see it, and I will probably have to look at research in multiple disciplines to find everything that is related. I have a better idea of where my work fits in just with the conversations, and I hope I can read a bit more material when I am in Berlin. I was having a hard time sleeping tonight, so I decided to write my first personal bl...
Hallo! To catch up a bit, Saturday we went to the Wien Museum and learned about pop music and general history (with an art focus) in Vienna. The pop music exhibit had many screens and headphones to watch/listen to examples of what they discussed, and it was interesting to hear. Then, we went to eat some quick tapas before Die Zauberfloete (The Magic Flute) at the Volksoper (People's Opera). The tapas were very good, and we had Birnensaft gespritzt (sparkling pear juice) to drink. It was fantastic to see opera for the first time, and seeing the Papageno songs were the most special for me since I had sung several of them for Solo & Ensemble in high school. All the songs I knew were in the second act, so it kept me waiting until the third to last song to hear all of the ones I knew. Afterwards, we got a quick pizza that was also delicious. Arts bring about quality food establishments. :) The next morning, we were out of the apartment and on the train to Bamberg. We talked with s...
That sums up my day: went out in the rain to eventually go inside an underground museum near the oldest park in the city to look at the Stockholm medieval history. After looking at bones, old weapons, and recreated faces for several hours, I left and walked around town for a bit. On the way to the Nobel Prize Museum, I found a "music and history" event in one of the main old churches in the city, and I thought it sounded interesting so I went for it. It ended up basically being a show in the church put on by the church staff. The show wasn't the highest quality, but it was done with sincerity and was fairly informative. One fun fact: the church is called "Big Church" (but in Swedish) because in protest of the King and his search for power a painting was created that depicted the church as being huge compared to the castle. Then, I wanted to go somewhere less mainstream than in the super touristy old town, so I walked just a few blocks and went to a nice, quieter...
